4th year riding in the “Tour de Shore!”

Ready to Ride!

I’ll be pedaling 65 miles with 1300 cyclists in the “Tour de Shore” on Sunday, July 31. It’s a fund-raising bike ride for police charities that goes from downtown Philadelphia to Atlantic City, NJ. This will be my fourth time riding in this great event. SINCERE THANKS to ALL who gave and supported the ride!!

The Importance of your GOALS

What’s YOUR health, fitness, or weight-loss goal? While ALL the individuals above are athletic and in good condition for what they are pursuing, it’s obvious that their training methods would VARY considerably! Is your goal endurance, like the marathon runners on the left? Or on the other end of the spectrum, is your goal massive size like the body builder on the far right? … Or is it a good physique and all around good conditioning, more like the man and woman in the center?

Your individual fitness goal(s) will play a big part in determining how you should train and what you should eat! If you don’t have a goal at all, how can you focus your efforts and move forward with an intelligent plan?

What Is “SUCCESS?”

We seek to lead our clients toward success in all areas of life!

People have debated & pondered this question for generations … CENTURIES for that matter! You’ve probably seen the bumper sticker/coffee mug quote: “He who dies with the most toys wins.” … that may sound cute, but is it true?
Many people think that if they could attain great levels of Fame, they’d be happy for the rest of their lives! Yet, history is full of stories (Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson) of some who got to these high levels, only to see their lives going into crazy, downward, self-destructive spirals. In fact, I’ve always found it amusing how many stars, who’ve sought to “make it” all their lives, then have to hide behind sunglasses and big floppy hats, so people won’t “spot them!” They have to WORK at AVOIDING that very attention that they worked so hard to get! … Other people have thought that if they could attain tremendous wealth, then surely they would be “successful” and therefore Happy. Yet, again we see and hear stories of some of our society’s wealthiest (professional athletes, TV/film stars, etc), whose lives become full of struggles, worries and conflict … often ending in drug abuse, personal scandals and sadly, even suicide.

So what is “Success” to YOU? Fame? Wealth? Job Achievement? Through the years, culture has had it’s wisdom and adages. We have some good quotes from philosophers and writers like these:

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a little better; whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is the meaning of success.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.” -Henry David Thoreau

Many might also think of the Bible as a source for answers … and it DOES have a LOT to say on the subject! Here are just a few passages:

“For he sees that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.” – Psalm 49:10  (wow, not real encouraging!)
“I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all.” – Ecclesiastes 9:11

We recently celebrated an 80th birthday party for my Dad.  We had almost 50 family members and friends who wanted to be part of it, and a good number more who couldn’t make it. … A great time, indeed! … My Mom and Dad have been together since their marriage in 1954, and have raised their 5 children, and now enjoy them and their grandchildren and even great-grandchildren! They’ve been involved in working with various churches through the years where & when they could. They are definitely not perfect, or super-achievers, but I (among a good number of others!) love them and respect them tremendously! … Might there at least be a partial answer here to what success really is? It would sure be interesting to hear some feedback on just what success is to various readers. Please feel free to share a comment!
